Welcome to National Poetry Month...

Here it is, another April. In honor of April, I would like to invite everyone to share their favorite poem throughout the month here on my blog, and I would like to open the blog up to a contest.

Those interested in winning three volumes of poetry--sorry the authors will be a surprise--please leave a comment below. I will put the names in a hat and then draw the winner on April 15.

I will probably hold another contest for the end part of the month as well. I hope we can generate a lot more interest in National Poetry Month this year.

I will start off with this poem:

THE TIGER

by: William Blake (1757-1827)

      IGER, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
      What immortal hand or eye
      Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder and what art
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And, when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand and what dread feet?

What the hammer? What the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? What dread grasp
      Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears,
And water'd heaven with their tears,
Did He smile His work to see?
Did He who made the lamb make thee?

      Tiger, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
      What immortal hand or eye
      Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

Can I enter the contest? Or am I disqualified due to close association? LOL

Anyway, here's my poem:

Emily Dickinson
The Chariot

Because I could not stop for Death,
He kindly stopped for me;
The carriage held but just ourselves
And Immortality.

We slowly drove, he knew no haste,
And I had put away
My labor, and my leisure too,
For his civility.

We passed the school where children played,
Their lessons scarcely done;
We passed the fields of gazing grain,
We passed the setting sun.

We paused before a house that seemed
A swelling of the ground;
The roof was scarcely visible.
The cornice but a mound.

Since then 'tis centuries; but each
Feels shorter than the day
I first surmised the horses' heads
Were toward eternity.

No one is disqualified from the contest regardless of association because I will be putting names in a hat and having the hubby pull them. makes it more fair that way.

I love that poem as well. I hope others will join in the National Poetry Month fun.

BTW, love this Emily Dickinson poem, Anna.

My favorite poem:

DUST OF SNOW
by Robert Frost

The way a crow
Shook down on me
The dust of snow
From a hemlock tree
Has given my heart
A change of mood
And saved some part
Of a day I had rued.

And a blog about it here:

Hey, there. Just wanted to let you know that I mentioned your contest on the Knitter's Review forum.

Serena said...

So far there are just two entries. LOL

Anna said...

Hey, I tried!

I'm circumventing the rules for my not so internet savvy aunt, Ann Howard, who submitted her contest entry to my email rather than my blog.

Here is her own poem:
No time
To rhyme.

Can't be late
For IRS date!

here you go -- my poem

Eldorado
Edgar Allan Poe

Gayly bedight,
A gallant knight,
In sunshine and in shadow,
Had journeyed long,
Singing a song,
In search of Eldorado.

But he grew old,
This knight so bold,
And o'er his heart a shadow
Fell as he found
No spot of ground
That looked like Eldorado.

And as his strength
Failed him at length,
He met a pilgrim shadow:
"Shadow," said he,
"Where can it be,
This land of Eldorado?"

"Over the Mountains
Of the Moon,
Down the Valley of the Shadow,
Ride, boldly ride,"
The shade replied,
"If you seek for Eldorado!'
